It has been a crazed period for the much loved British manufacturer Lotus. The brand know for creating some of the worlds best handling sports cars and even helping those without that skill set has been toiling with everything from legal battles in F1 to a lack of funding for their radical new direction. So whats the news now? Well to free up some cash plans for the 911 rivaling Elan have been put on hold for now but that monitory injection has led to some interesting developments for its proposed bigger brother; the Esprit.
Due to hatch in 2013 the reincarnation of this legendary name is to take on the most competitive segment of the motor industry. Its closest rivals such as the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12c have already been immortalized as so very close to perfection. Can the Esprit really compete? With the extra money to play with Lotus has decided to ditch the intended V8 from the Lexus IS-F and go in-house building their own engine. Now that is a combination the big boys should be worried about because the last time a Lotus carried this nameplate and had its own engine it took them to the cleaners making Lotus the legend it is today. The new 5.0 litre V8 will be coupled with KERS thats only purpose is to boost performance and not to save the environment. Mix in the 7 speed dual-clutch gearbox and the projected 700+Nm of torque, not to mention a price undercutting rivals at £110,000, the 2013 Lotus Esprit could be a real winner.
