BMW have revealed this years 1 Series which will go on sale this Spring following the Geneva Motor Show in March. The new 1 Series will benefit from styling tweaks – mainly to the front and rear – as well as a broader options list and an improved infotainment system. More importantly, it will also have a range of new 3-cylinder diesel engines, from the same family of engines in the latest Mini, and altered 4-cylinder engines that promise to come with greater power as well as better efficiency.
The entry level petrol model is the 118i, which is priced at £20,775 and is powered by a 1.6-litre four cylinder engine producing 136bhp and goes from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds. Using the same engine, the 120i produces 170bhp and goes from 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds. Moving up the petrol range – the 125i has a 2.0-litre four cylinder engine which produces a more exciting 218bhp and can hit 62mph from a standing start in just 6.2 seconds. At the peak of the range, of course, is the M135i which is powered by a turbocharged straight-six engine. Power output has been increased over previous models and it now produces 326bhp which allows it to reach 62mph in just 4.9 seconds, yet it can still return 37.7mpg, which is more than impressive.
Starting the range for the diesel models is the 116d – this is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that produces 116bhp. it takes 10.3 seconds to go from 0-62mph but is capable of hitting 78.5mpg. This impressive efficiency can be improved further if you opt for the 116d EfficientDynamics Plus model, which improves fuel consumption up to 83.1mpg as well as producing less CO2. The new four-cylinder diesel engines come in three different models: the 118d produces 150bhp, achieves 74.3mpg and goes from 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds, the 120d has 190bhp and hits the 62mph mark in 7.0 seconds. Also available is the 125d with its multi-stage turbocharging – this model produces an impressive 224bhp and sprints to 62mph in just 6.3 seconds but also manages a very respectable 61.4mpg.
Most of the new 1-Series’ will come with a 6-speed manual gearbox with engagement speed control to ensure the smoothest possible gear changes. The 120d xDrive however, come with the eight-speed steptronic gearbox as standard which is otherwise an option on the other models. This automatic gearbox works in conjunction with the navigation system and ensures that gear changes are precisely timed to suit the driving situation.
The eight-speed Sport Automatic transmission is available as an option on the 125i, M135i, 120d and 120d xDrive models. It comes as standard on the BMW 125d and features faster gear changes, shift paddles on the steering wheel as well as a launch control option.
The new 1 Series is available in three trims – SE, Sport and M Sport. Equipment that comes as standard includes remote control central locking, keyless engine ignition, electrically heated exterior mirrors, electric windows and the Driving Experience Control switch. A huge amount of features are also included such as a rain sensor with automatic driving lights control and BMW Radio Professional.
