It feels like we have been waiting forever for the new Honda Civic Type-R and that is because we have… It has been a long time since a VTEC performance car from Honda has been in the showroom, but 2015 is when that all changes. Whilst the NSX is astonishing, the obtainable performance car for most of us is the 2015 Honda Civic Type-R. We have all seen the menacing concept car many times, but now at the Geneva motor show we can finally see the real thing.
Bursting onto the scene with 306BHP coming from a 2.0 litre turbocharged VTEC engine, this is the 2015 Honda Civic Type-R. Visually it is still a mean looking machine but has been toned down substantially from the concept which we were told was close to production specification. It is most noticeable at the rear where the diffuser is more square, rear hunches less blistered and large wing more conventional. What isn’t disappointing is the Type-R’s performance. 0-62MPH is done and dusted in just 5.7 seconds and it will go onto a top speed of 167MPH making it the fastest car in its class at the moment. A “Dual Axis Strut” will get all of that power through the front wheels and down to the tarmac. Suspension has been substantially modified to reduce body roll when cornering more aggressively. +R mode increases throttle response, changes the torque mapping of the engine and stiffens the dampers by 30%.
A development car has lapped “the ‘ring” in 7 minutes 50 seconds making the 2015 Honda Civic Type-R the fastest hot hatchback beating Renaults Megan RS 275.
