A few weeks ago we brought you news of the arrival of Alfa Romeo’s gorgeous new 3 Series rival, the Giulia. Due for sale on European shores in early 2016, Alfa’s all-new sports saloon is but the tip of the ice-berg in a rumoured 5 billion euro top-down range revamp comprising the launch of no less than 8 new models by 2018.
Next in line at the iconic Italian stable is the cryptically-named project 949, Alfa’s first ever crack at the crossover market. To be based on the Giulia platform, the notion of a premium Alfa crossover is nothing new. Those blessed with encyclopaedic memories will recall the Kamal concept SUV starring for Alfa at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show. However, the Kamal never made it to production and in the 12 years since Alfa Romeo first toyed with the idea, other premium manufactures have stolen a march in the compact SUV race. That means project 949’s production-ready derivative, whatever its eventual guise, will have the unenviable task of taking on the established premium crossover elite – think the Audi Q3, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC.
Little else is known regarding the nuts and bolts of the up-coming new Alfa crossover at this stage. More info could be gleaned as technical details on its sister car the Giulia saloon reach us later this year. What we can say for certain is this: by late 2016, you’ll be able to walk into your local Alfa dealership and drive away in a bold, bright and almost certainly beautiful new crossover.
