The Volkswagen Golf R has gained much popularity at the top of the model tree and is a key rival amongst the newly christened hyper hatchbacks. All wheel drive, plenty of performance, and the solid traits of a Golf is a winning combination for the most pragmatic sensible performance car owner. The recent facelift to its siblings brought with it various tweaks, but now there is official word on the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R.
A modest power boost headlines the updated car, just 10 BHP, but that 310 BHP total is enough to nudge past the Honda Civic Type R. 0-62 MPH is now completed in 4.6 seconds when the car is optioned with a 7 speed DSG gearbox. 295lb ft of torque helps the car on its way and is maximised by that all important AWD system.
Externally the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R gets all of the goodies that the standard car was upgraded with. Reworked facias and bumpers are joined by LED lighting. Inside a new 12.3 inch display and an infotainment system with gesture controls is optional.
Good news for estate fans… You can still get the Golf R with that added boot room, meaning that even the dog can enjoy 0-62 MPH in 4.9 seconds.
The 2017 Volkswagen Golf R goes on sale in the UK come February at a yet to be disclosed price.
