General Motors has seen huge success with the Chevrolet Volt, an electric car that promise 0% range anxiety. Using a petrol engine to recharge the battery when it is low the car has proven to be very efficient. Naturally GM want to maximise the global reach of this platform and so the Vauxhall Ampera was born. Now engineers want the Volt underpinnings to become the basis of another model.
The Cadillac ELR was first seen in concept form in 2009 and showed the world that Caddy could still design a good looking car. This is the finished production machine and as previously mentioned, under its coupe body sits the Chevrolet Volt platform. Offering 2+2 luxury and better performance than the Volt, this premium incarnation is set to go on sale in Europe next year. Total power comes to 204BHP accompanied by 295lb ft of torque. Combined that is enough to get the ELR from 0-62MPH in just over 8 seconds. Not bad considering that it weighs 35KG more than a Volt.
