Ford’s New Focus ST-R Swaps The Traffic For The Track

Sometimes you just get the feeling that manufacturers are adding on extra letters to the end of their models simply to demonstrate their level of alphabetical competence or as an excuse to use up the surplus pieces of wood effect panelling on the dashboard of an end-of-production car. Well you can take this idea and toss it out of the new Focus ST-R’s electric window as its 2.0  litre EcoBoost engine catapults you down the home straight on a track day!

With the ST road version also debuting today, professionals, amateurs and track-day enthusiasts alike will no doubt relish the news of its racing alter ego’s unveiling at Frankfurt. As well as the standard 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder, 247 BHP engine available in the ST, the race tweaked production based ST-R is a fully-prepared competition car featuring FIA regulation roll cage, uprated brakes and track-tuned suspension.

It will be available to teams soon, starting in North America, to race in a variety of series but will of course be released on general sale to petrol heads world wide in a ready-to-race off the peg format. Proof then, if required, that in this case, that “R” is more than just a letter.
