“With every word and every number you move faster and faster… On the count of 10 you will be in Horizon.” A cinematic countdown begins showing a world of colour, music and mouth watering cars. 10. Welcome to Forza Horizon 2, the followup to the hugely popular open world racing game. Horizon 2 promises to be bigger, more detailed and packed full of petrol head orientated goodness. Considering your first task within the game is to deliver a Lamborghini Huracan via some stunning Italian mountain and costal roads, Playground Games have immediately delivered on that final point.
Unlike Forza Motorsport 5, the horizon series of games is more about having fun within car culture as opposed to nailing lap times in a simulation. The whole game is based around a music festival and takes place in the south of France and Italy. The Xbox One does a stunning job of rendering these beautiful scenes which is only amplified when the new dynamic weather begins to rain down upon your chosen steed. Each water droplet glistens in the light and the spray kicked up by leading cars makes the whole scene feel very real.
Gameplay is accessible to any skill level with many aids on offer to those who want them. The driving is far from the simulation that Forza 5 creates, but to the causal gamer the drifty nature of these cars will be all the more enjoyable. Road trips to various events across a map, that is three times bigger then the original game, almost forges a bond between you and your car as it does in real life. Customise and upgrade to be unique, something that is always impressive to see when playing online. Whilst the AI you face is entirely based upon how your friends drive, it uses the same drivatar system as FM5, they can be a bit clumsy and unaware of other cars around them. I found each event to be enjoyable and special events, which might have you racing a train for example, enthralling.
We still have many more hours ahead of us in Forza Horizon 2, but so far it scores highly. Now if you don’t mind, I have a LaFerrari to get dirty.
