It’s back, the indestructible, bullet proof, Mercedes Benz G-Class is back after ten years out of a right hand drive market! The G has always been the Germans answer to the British Defender; it’s just as robust and just as capable off-road. That’s high praise as we consider the Land Rover to the most capable 4X4 you can buy.
Of course after ten years Merced’s have had to update various components most noticeably of which is the cars source of power. The base model contains a 3.5 litre CDI producing 221BHPand attempts to please the green folk with 25.7 mpg. But the one you’re really interested in is the 5.5 litre AMG Kompressor with its mammoth 500BHP and a 0-62MPH of 5.5 seconds. Both variants come extremely well equipped as standard including: Automatic climate control; automatic transmission, with high and low gear ratios; Bi-Xenon headlamps, heated seats with memory, leather upholstery (including the dashboard) as well as COMAND, a reverse parking aid and a Harman Kardon Logic 7 Sound system.
Despite this car truly kicking the Defenders arse as far as equipment is concerned, it certainly doesn’t on price. The base model is awhopping £57,975 and the AMG a colossal £114,975! Yes the Land Rover should be concerned that the old kid has returned to the block, but not too worried because at those prices it will again only be criminal under lords who buy them.
