The new Mazda MX-5. We saw it, we drove it and we loved it. It wasn’t just us here at Insidelane who were wooed either. The 2015 reincarnation of one of the world’s most icon roadsters went down like a storm worldwide, triumphantly celebrating a quarter of a century of top down driving delight whilst simultaneously ushering in the fastest, most advanced, and most desirable MX-5 yet.
The fourth generation MX-5 is already a year into its lifespan and we’ve been anticipating the arrival of some special variants for some time now. On the eve of the 2016 New York Auto Show, here’s the news that MX-5 fanatics the world over will have been waiting for; the international premier of the new Mazda MX-5 RF.
Standing for retractable fastback, the new two letter moniker signifies one very important thing; the arrival of an all-new MX-5 hardtop. Kitted out with some very sleek fastback styling, including a smooth, pitched roofline, the new RF’s power roof and retractable back window brings a whole new take on what is already a highly seductive roadster design.
The hardtop roof itself, the RF’s pièce de résistance, opens and closes with the press of a button at low speeds, giving you time to stow or deploy the hardware whilst in traffic. Both efficient and compact, the RF does not lose out on its soft-top counterpart in the space stakes, offering just as much luggage room as the base MX-5.
Similarly, the new roadster variant will be available on these shores with the same choice of two SKYACTIV-G petrol engines; 129 bhp 1.5 litre unit and the more brawny 158 bhp 2.0 litre model. As before, both come mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, but new and exclusively available for the RF is a six-speed automatic.
The usual plentiful selection of body colours returns and is now bolstered by the edition of a ‘Machine Grey’ finish, another RF exclusive.
The new MX-5 RF makes its debut at the Mazda stand at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, which opens its doors to the public from 25 March to 3 April.
