Inside Lane’s Green Car of the Year award celebrates not necessarily the highest MPG rating of 2014, a but cars that are impressively green in one way or another. It was a close call this year with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV just missing out. That SUV introduced plug-in technology to a segment that could do with some improved emissions ratings at a reasonable price considering how popular such cars are. Our winner for 2014 is much more surprising as it actually wears a Mercedes-Benz badge. A Mercedes winning Green Car of the Year? Have we gone mad?
Well, no actually. The Mercedes-Benz S500 PLUG-IN HYBRID wins the 2014 award for being a no compromise solution for those who spend their time in the city. Just as beautifully engineered as any other S-Class, this model gives very little away that it differs from its siblings. A huge array of technology onboard means that you can work on the move in comfort. Whilst it does have a twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine, it also possesses a battery pack enabling complete electric running up to 85MPH. This silent form of travel suits the S-Class’ character. Despite a 0-62MPH time of just 5.2 seconds, the limo will return a claimed 100.9MPG. You have to admit that those figures are mighty impressive side by side.
