Was it an inevitability? The headline you read is very much true as Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson has been suspended from the show. After being put on his final warning by the BBC for claimed racism last year, the motoring journalist has been carted off “following a fracas” with a producer. As a result Top Gear fans will be disappointed to find out that this Sunday nights show will be canceled. The man has found himself in a great deal of hot water of late and it would appear that the BBC are now doing something about it.
Top Gear has become one of the most watch TV shows around the world and it is the BBC’s most valuable property. This transformation from “car show” to entertainment program has seen many staged events which has put off the purists who have followed the show for years. However, Top Gear’s vast audience means that the BBC will follow the numbers, whatever format the show has to take. It is widely believed that it is those huge viewing figures that have stopped Clarkson getting into trouble in the past.
The BBC obviously don’t want tot throw the baby out with the bath water, but could Top Gear be Top Gear without the highly opinionated personality? Only time will tell.
Officially the BBC has stated “Following a fracas with a BBC producer, Jeremy Clarkson has been suspended pending an investigation.” A spokeswoman went on to say “No one else has been suspended. Top Gear will not be broadcast this Sunday. The BBC will be making no further comment at this time.”
