The McLaren 12C is a masterclass in technological perfection for mid-engined V8 supercars. On paper and out on track it gives its closest rival, the Ferrari 458 Italia, a very hard time indeed. However, there is one element where journalists have repeatedly said the Ferrari is better. The McLaren doesn’t feel as involving to drive as the Ferrari. In short, the red car produces more drama. McLaren aim to change that with the McLaren 650S Spider.
We have already seen the McLaren 650S Coupe, but at the Geneva motor show the British brand also unveiled a topless variation of its more hardcore 12C. 641BHP and 500lb-ft comes thanks to a 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8 engine. 0-62MPH takes just 3 seconds and 0-100MPH only 5.7 seconds. Carbon brakes come as standard delivering fantastic stopping power to McLaren’s latest addition. Gear changes are handled by a 7 speed dual clutch gearbox that has been tuned to deliver more ferocious cog swapping. The new cars metal folding roof allows more of that glorious V8 music into the cockpit. Externally the P1 hyper car has influenced new design elements, in particular the front bumper.
