McLaren are legendary in the world of motorsport. The British team with some of the worlds best equipment and engineers/designers produce championship contesting cars with some of the most innovative ideas, though how creative they get in terms of the rule book is often contested. Last season was hotly contested and McLaren took multiple 1-2 victories during its progression only to lose out in the final race. This years car, the MP4-26, is said to be a revolution though it won’t arrive for the official first testing of the 2011 Formula One cars in time.
The car may well be as innovative as what McLaren say, in fact we have no doubt it is, but losing a test day could be costly as the teams can only run the cars on specified days. Red Bull didn’t do any winter testing on their car and it cost them dearly in terms of reliability. McLaren well run a modified 2010 car on the first day to collect data before the MP4-26’s unavailing the day after. Martin Whitmarch, McLaren team principal, has said the delay is to give the drivers “the best possible package” for the opening race on March 13th.
