The BMW X6 has calved out a successful niche for itself with sales far surpassing expectations, not only of BMW, but the world. Its Marmite appearance creates a “love it or hate it” SUV that likes to try and imitate a sports car in some respects. Mercedes have allowed BMW to be the guinea pig long enough and are now jumping on the strange coupe SUV bandwagon with the GLE. At the Detroit motor show the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 has been revealed.
Directly aimed at the BMW X6 M, the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 is the most potent incarnation of this new car. Powered by a 5.5 litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, the GLE can produce 549BHP and 516b ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 7 speed automatic gearbox. 0-62MPH comes and goes in just 4.3 seconds. Choose to go for the more potent Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S and thanks to 577BHP that time drops to 4.2 seconds. Pricing has yet to be announced but expect it to be not a million miles away from £90,000.
Its aggressive AMG styling will hit showrooms in June. How it fairs against the already established X6 will be interesting.
