The Mercedes-Benz A-Class has had a chequered past. Its first incarnation was original yet famously failed the elk test. Later generations improved upon a popular formula of petite luxury but the car was never even close to being a class leader. It capture a niche that just wasn’t widespread enough to make waves, however this next generation hatchback is aiming squarely for the 1 Series from BMW and the likes of Audi’s A3.
Named the Concept A this cars metamorphosis is apparent immediately. It is no longer a micro-MPV and instead sports an aggressive hot-hatch flare. The finished product is to debut next year but is said to not stray very far from the concepts flowing lines. The Concept A is powered by a 2.0 litre 204BHP engine with a new dual-clutch gearbox bolted to it. AMG will also produce a “super-hatch” variant with over 300BHP from a turbo power plant upon a four-wheel-drive base.
Bye bye dumpy people mover and hello seductive hatch.
