Next year will mark 50 years since one of the greatest “up yours” in motoring history occurred. Once upon a time Ford were on the verge of buying Ferrari as they had a keen interest to go racing. However, Enzo Ferrari changed his mind at the last moment sparking Mr Ford to go all out in a bid to beat Ferrari at their own game. The GT40 was born and in 1966 three cars finished 1-2-3 at the prestigious Le Mans 24 hour. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of that victory, the GT40 won the event from 1966-69, Ford has revealed this… The 2016 Ford GT Le Mans.
Based upon the new Ford GT supercar, this racer will compete in the World Endurance Championships throughout 2016. Powered by the same 3.5 litre V6 EcoBoost as the road car, the 2016 Ford GT Le Mans will fit into the LM GTE Pro class alongside Porsche 911, Ferrari 458 Italia, Corvette C7R and Aston Martin V8 Vantage. It is a tough grid and so the challenge should not be underestimated. In total four cars will be in the races, two teams of two with drivers to be announced at a later date.
According to Ford, the new GT was always intended to take Ford back to the track.
