At the Detroit Motor Show Ford have unveiled the new F-150 Raptor which will be released in the Autumn of 2016. The renowned off road pick up truck will no longer have it’s 6.2-litre V8 and will be replaced by a smaller 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine but manages to produce more power. The exact figures of this power are not yet released, but the last Raptor had 411bhp so whatever it is, it’s going to be pretty serious. This engine will work alongside a new ten-speed gearbox for better efficiency compared with the six-speed in the previous model. A lightweight aluminium body and other means of weight-shedding also contribute to a Raptor that is around 230KG less than before.
Ford claim that better traction is achieved through a new four-wheel drive system as well as a new Terrain Management System in which you select what sort of terrain you’re driving over and the vehicle adjusts accordingly. New suspension is also an improvement. A 20% size increase in the shock absorbers allow for more suspension travel when the going gets tough.
Off-road tyres will be fitted on 17-inch alloy wheels and for the first time on a Raptor a dual exhaust will be fitted. Ford Vice President, Raj Nair said “When we created the first Raptor, we set out to prove vehicle performance isn’t just measured on the street or at the track – off-road can be even more fun”. This new Raptor looks like it may be King when taken off of the beaten path.
