It has been 16 years since the last of its kind met the road. It was a rumour up until this morning… The cars name echoes back to the earliest days of the German company and today after so very long it has returned. The Porsche 911 Speedster is back and fully regenerated for the 21st century. The roof is gone and the low swept windscreen is back with vengeance as Germany assaults Paris for the International Motor Show once again.
The new 911 Speedster is based on the cabriolet variant of the standard car and really does look the part with its double bubble rear deck as well as wide rear track. Just like the Boxster Spyder, the 911 Speedster has a manually assembled roof (more like a tent) to keep the rain out. The cars performance is derived from the same engine in the recently announced Carrera GTS so it’s a 3.8 litre flat six with 402BHP. The speedster also receives Porsche’s new 7 speed dual clutch gearbox and it will set to back a rather costly £144,000.
Though we do like the Speedster for the same reason as the Sport Classic, being the perfect embodiment of retro styling and modern-day performance, we do think it’s a bit on the pricy side.
