By now I am sure you have all heard the sad news of Saab slipping into bankruptcy. It was not a fitting end to a badge that has contributed greatly to the industry since its beginnings in 1937. We wanted to do something special to commemorate Saab and so the idea of getting hold of an old model and giving it some modern sporting credentials was quickly formed. However the costs of doing this was more than anticipated, and so the dream died. It was a shame as some of the ideas we came up with were brilliant! If only we could format them in reality… Then it struck us! We could still live the dream providing we made it in a virtual reality. For this we turned to the brilliant Forza Motorsport 4, a highly realistic racing simulation, for the Xbox 360.
We began with a 1978 Saab 99 Turbo, a car that really pushed the technologies of its time. That was great in 1978 but today it would need a bit more to be competitive. Swapping out the old motor for a newer Saab 2.8 litre, with turbo of course, we began to breath new life into the car. A race compound of tyre, new suspension, reinforcing of the structure and a few engine modifications later and our tribute car was ready. The end result in an all-wheel-drive 477BHP blast from the past. The turbo will now do 0-60MPH in just 2.8 seconds and 0-100MPH in 6.7. Top speed is 184MPH. All that was left to do was a little bit of fettling to ensure the car handled well out on track and the application of a subtle racing stripe.
We think this car is a fitting tribute and only wish we could have built it in in real life. A positive of doing the build in Forza is that providing you have the game this very car can be yours for free! Just search “Inside Lane Saab” on the design and tuning storefront.
