It wouldn’t be the Detroit motor show without an American sized helping of muscle cars! Whilst late last year the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat closed with an impressive show for the class, as 2015 opens it is Ford and their new global Ford Performance banner that sets the stage. If we are talking blue oval muscle, then clearly we are talking Mustang. The great Mr Shelby may be gone, but his name lives on in the aggressive new Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R of which was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show.
This car is much more than a set of wheels and a big engine… Whilst it does indeed have a big motor, a naturally aspirated 5.2 litre V8 to be exact, a lot of time has been spent in order to make this the most track focused Mustang ever. A new aerodynamic package featuring a front splitter and large carbon spoiler produce the downforce required to keep 493BHP from its flat-plane crank V8 on the road. Advanced cooling channels and some serious suspension tweaks also make the list. The Shelby Mustang GT350R is 59KG lighter than the standard GT350 thanks partly due to carbon fibre wheels.
The car is available in America and Canada later this year, but there is no word on whether it will join the European Mustang.
