Hot hatchbacks really are a blast! You can genuinely have as much fun is one of these well-sorted pocket rockets on public roads as you can in a supercar. They fizz, pop and bang bringing a real element of dram as the car pitches up on three wheels going around a tight bend. At the moment there is a bit of a three way battle for supremacy between Vauxhall, Renault and Ford in this class. The Renaultsport Megane 265 is an excellent car as is Ford’s Focus ST. The Vauxhall Astra VXR is the most powerful of the trio and is indeed a force of be reckoned with. However, Vauxhall are very keen to take the crown and so have produced the Astra VXR Extreme. Vauxhall Astra VXR Extreme is 296BHP hothatch.
Powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine producing a mega 296BHP, the Vauxhall Astra VXR Extreme is a stripped out, hardcore variant of the hatchback it is based upon. Weight reductions see a 100KG saving over the standard VXR mainly due to the use of aluminium and carbonfibre. New cross-bracing and a limited-slip differential aim to make this model one of the best handling the class has ever seen. Other changes include a larger rear wing, front splitter and a diffuser. Obviously with all this power on tap the brakes need to match the performance. Six piston Brembo’s should bring the car to a halt pretty sharpish!
With enough interest at the Geneva motor show, the Vauxhall Astra VXR Extreme will make production.
