The new Volkswagen Beetle Dune will be unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show in both coupé and convertible designs. Harking back to the Baja California dune buggies of old, this Beetle Dune sports some off-road aesthetics alongside a greater ride height and large 18-inch alloy wheels.
The ethos of the Beetle Dune is to ‘invite adventure’, it is a completely redesigned model with a large central air inlet, black side trim strips and the “DUNE” badge underscore. The raised ride height supposedly emphasises the Dune’s all-terrain visage. Despite this off-road accentuation, the Beetle Dune will only be available with front-wheel drive, however.
Going round the back, other new design features include a large rear spoiler, a newly designed rear bumper and LED rear lights. There will be nine body colours to choose from, new colours to the range are “Sandstorm Yellow Metallic” and “Dark Bronze Metallic”. Customers can also choose to have their roof painted black and all buyers who opt for the cabriolet Dune will get a black soft top.
The interior continues in a similar contemporary vain as the exterior; inclusive of the Dash Pad, contrast stitching on the sport seats and leather trimmed steering wheel as well as the seating areas, door trim panels, roof panels and headlining all being finished in a contrasting black. The new Dune will also sport Volkswagen’s latest infotainment system, which can be upgraded with various features such as DAB+ radio and a second Bluetooth phone interface depending on the car’s specification.
For European customers, the Beetle Dune will be available with a choice of three turbocharged petrol engines and two turbodiesel engines. The petrol options consist of a 1.2-litre 103bhp engine, a 1.4-litre 148bhp unit and a 2.0-litre engine producing 217bhp. The diesel variants are 1.6 and 2.0-litre engines producing 109bhp and 148bhp respectively. The transmission options include the standard six-speed manual gearbox or the optional six or seven speed dual clutch automatic transmission.
The Volkswagen Beetle Dune can be ordered from German Volkswagen partners from Thursday, 19 November with base prices starting at €23,625 (£16,566) for the coupé and €27,800 (£19,494) for the cabriolet.
