The original Beetle is universally, by most motoring journals anyway, the most hateful little machine on the road. Its noisy, its ugly, it rolls through the corners, its breaks are made of rice and to top it all of Hitler had a hand in its creation. The car did sell phenomenally well around the globe, but don’t think for one second that this was due to its driving credentials. VW’s third generation Beetle must sell on more than looks alone and so a more aggressive version is very welcome.
The new car is a lot more masculine and we like that, but the Germans are going a step further with this R model. Though still a concept at this point, we would be very surprised if the Beetle R didn’t make it into production. This Beetle sports more angular bumpers, quad exhausts, and racing seats. Powered by a 2.0 litre turbo engine this could be the bug that bites back at critics.
