After getting a good look around the finished product at a special event, it was asked in the comments if we could compare and contrast it to a couple of different competitors. Continuing this series is one of the most requested rivals for this RS, the Subaru WRX STI. Both are all wheel drive, both cost similar money, both have rallying heritage. As I am sure you guys and girls now know from all of the anticipation surrounding it, the 2016 Ford Focus RS is powered by a turbocharged 2.3 litre EcoBoost engine. It sends 345 BHP to all four wheels via a six speed manual transmission. Torque is 324lb ft but this can rise to 347lb ft on overboots for up to 15 seconds. All of that translates into a 0-62 MPH time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 165 MPH.

The Subaru name is synonymous with all wheel drive performance and the latest incarnation offers more of the same. The Subaru WRX STI sources its power from the well known 2.5 litre boxer engine which is also turbocharged. 296 BHP and 300lb ft of torque gets this car from 0-62 MPH in 5.2 seconds with a top speed reaching 159 MPH.

Whilst the Ford Focus RS wins the battle of the numbers so far, another consideration is weight. The WRX STI tips the scales at 1,509 KG whereas the RS comes to 1,599 KG. It will be interesting to see what difference that makes in the real world. Each also has a set of Brembo brakes.

Both the Focus and WRX STI offer Recaro seats and good levels of practicality, although a hatchback opening might be more useful for some.

The Ford Focus RS features a Ken Block inspired drift mode enabling controlled slides and some heroic sideways action. The Subaru WRX STI has its own ace in its more off road inspired setup.
