Aston Martin DB5 Drowns In Flood

The weather in the UK has taken a turn for the worse over the past few weeks. Bitterly cold winds, heavy snow and now widespread flooding are having a detrimental effect on driving conditions. Many cars have suffered as a result, some even to the point of being written off, but today comes news of one of the worst calamities to take place on British roads.

An Aston Martin DB5 has been drowned by floodwaters in Longcot. Valued at £300,000 the James Bond star plunged into water two feet deep after the driver reportedly ignored floodwater signs. We all know the damage high volumes of water can do to a modern car, let alone a classic. The value of DB5’s have steadily risen over the decades and with only 1,023 ever produced, they aren’t going to become any cheaper.

Powered by a 4 litre engine with 282BHP, the Aston Martin DB5 could hit speeds of 145MPH back in 1963.

Aston Martin Rapide S Reports For Duty

The Aston Martin Rapide is an unusual sort of car. Billed as a sports car and not a luxury saloon, it gives all four occupants the sensations on offer from its DB9 sibling. Considering its size this is quite an achievement and though the Rapide is not the fastest of this current crop of “super saloons,” it is by far and away the most beautiful. For 2013 Aston are adding a little more spice to the V12 people mover.

Named the Rapide S, it packs 550BHP punch from its 5.9 litre engine. That is 80BHP more than the standard car! Torque has also increased to 620lb-ft. Those two figures are enough to get the Rapide S from standing to 62MPH in just 4.9 seconds and onto a top speed of 190MPH. The front grill has increased in size to allow for better cooling of its V12 heart. The interior remains the same but can now be specified with “Duotone,” an option that allows for two toned seating.

The Rapide S is to hit showrooms February this year.

Rolls-Royce Wraith Teased

Rolls-Royce produce the most luxurious cars in the world, bar none. With breathtaking attention to detail, the firm has thrived over the past few years taking record sales thanks to markets such as China and the middle east. They have never really done sporty in the same way that The Queen has never played Twister, it just never suited their character profile. In 2013 that is to change with the introduction of their fastest and most powerful car  ever to be wear the spirit of ecstasy.

To be named the Rolls-Royce Wraith, this two door coupe has been previewed in this teaser image. The “fastback” rear end will clearly dominate the cars profile but Rolls-Royce tells us that many classic stylistic features are also to be present. The cars sporting credentials are to be backed but by tuning on the Nürburgring.

The Wraith will make its debut at the 2013 Geneva motor show in March.

Bentley Continental GT Speed Drops Its Top For 2013

And so it begins… 2013 has arrived and Bentley becomes the first manufacturer to show the world what this year has to offer. The new Continental of last year arrived to great acclaim and improved upon the British brands successful formula. As we creep out of winter convertibles become viable again and Bentley knows this very well.

This is the 2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible and right now it is the fastest four seater drop-top the world has to offer. It’s 616BHP W12 engine howls to a top speed of 202MPH. 0-62MPH is swiftly taken care of in just 4.4 seconds all whilst occupants are bathed in absolute luxury. New dampers and antiroll bars take care of the car when the going gets twisty. Its twin-turbocharged powerhouse, despite being more powerful than the previous model, is also 15% more efficient.

The new car will go on sale this summer.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage

Aston Martin V8 Vantage trackI hate to say it but over the past few decades Great Britain has lost a lot of the things the makes it so great. Gone are the industries of which this country were built upon, vanquished is the hunger to be the worlds best. All of this is very sad for people who say they are “proud to be British” and long for the days when Britannia ruled the waves to return. Well people of the United Kingdom stand fast as Aston Martin has heeded your call.

Aston Martin are one of the only companies in the automotive sector that remain British. Though subsidised by a few foreign investors, each car is designed and crafted at their HQ in Warwickshire, but more importantly, each machine is constructed with a true British “stiff upper lip” ethos. The company over the past have suffered many blows but their ingenuity and fantastic craftsmanship have triumphed in the face of adversity. The Aston Martin V8 Vantage is their best selling model and for very good reason.

Sitting upon the tarmac is nothing short of a master piece. This is the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, not so much a car, but an automotive sculpture. It truly is glorious to look at with its bold lines and aggressive stance. The sheer attention to detail really affirms the Vantage as a premium product. Everything from the door handles that sit flush to the body, to the precision of the side vents all give this car a sense of depth, a sense that this is more than just a machine to ferry footballers to and from training.

Inside the beautiful mastery of materials continues with hand crafted leather and comfortable seats. The cockpit is a snug affair feeling like it literally wraps around you, cocooning you with both luxury and functionality. Visibility is rather good for a car of its caliber and though lacking the rear seats, if that’s what you want to call them, of its direct competitor of the Porsche 911 the Aston never feels cramped.

Turning the key brings to life the cars 4.3 litre V8, 380BHP beating heart. The sensation that rushes through your ears is akin to a a lions roar. The noise of this machine is simply biblical. 0-60MPH is completed in 4.8 seconds and the V8 Vantage wont stop until it hits its top speed of 175MPH. Unlike a lot of modern performance cars, our test car was equipped with a manual gearbox which suited the demeanor of this machine perfectly. In motion this Aston is not a machine that will let you lie back and do everything for you. It requires a driver not just to push buttons, but to take it by the scruff of the neck and make it dance. You get as much out of the V8 as what you put in. Turn-in even in difficult conditions is sharp and precise thanks to steering that offers good levels of feedback. Tickle the throttle upon the exit of a corner and the back end comes out to play in a manor that brings nothing but a smile to your face. Putting your foot down is met with a symphony of pure power that echoes booms around the surrounding landscape and when it comes time to slow down the rotors on this coupe are more than capable. With each downshift of the extremely satisfying gearbox the car pops and bangs adding to the drama.

Though it is clear that the Aston Martin V8 Vantage is meant for those continental blasts to France and not really spend its days pounding a race track, nothing stopped it from being anything short of impressive. It is refined yet capable, relaxing yet exciting. This V8 Vantage shall not only be remembered as one of Astons greatest creations, but also one of the best cars money can buy.

Jaguar Kills-Off C-X75 Supercar

We are entering into an era that will be remembered for producing some of the greatest performance cars the world has ever seen. McLaren are readying their breathtaking P1, Porsche enter the fray with the 918 Spyder and Ferrari are on the verge of launching the successor to the Enzo. Jaguar were set to revive dreams of the XJ220 with their revolutionary C-X75, but no more…

According to Jaguar the current economic climate is “the wrong time” to sell such a car. Granted it’s cost was estimated to be around the £1 Million mark but lets face it, all of the previously mentioned names aren’t letting that stop them. The 1.6 litre turbo and supercharged engine was coupled with an electric motor for a total power output of 888BHP. 0-62MPH could be achieved in 2.8 seconds and 0-100MPH in less than 6. Not only were those figures exciting but the C-X75 was capable of 60 miles of all electric drive.

Jag will continue the development of the car along with the Williams F1 team until May 2013. From there five working prototypes will be built, only three of those are to be sold. Just when we thought the days of Jaguar producing enticing concept cars but then not building them were over, they decide to kill off a car that was already signed off for production.

Investindustrial Purchases 37.5% of Aston Martin

What national identity a car manufacturer has means very little to the world these days. Baring Ferrari, which prides itself on being Italian, most manufacturers are owned by various business either in part or in full. So what makes a car company synonymous with one nation over another. Would you say that the Bugatti Veyron is a French car because that is where the brand has its origins and where the Veyron itself is built? Or would say it is German as the firm is owned by VW? The point I am trying to make here is that Aston Martin is very much in the worlds eyes, British. But with the sale of 37.5% of the company, what does this mean for James Bond’s weapon of choice?

In short, not a lot. Everything will remain as it is and all of the cogs shall continue to spin. Investindustrial, an Italian investment outfit, have purchased 37.5% of Aston Martin from owners Investment Dar. The deal secures a £500 Million investment in future products that will likely expand as well as advance Aston Martin’s current line-up. Investindustrial have ties with Mercedes-Benz and AMG that could potentially lead to parts sharing, though it was stressed that such an arrangement was not part of the deal.

So is Aston Martin still fit to provide cars for Her Majesties Secret Service? Let’s just say that they retain their license to thrill!

Jaguar XFR-S Is A Big Cat With Big Claws

Jaguar is rapidly expanding its range of luxury and sports cars in a bit to capture more of the market. The sports car side of things got a real boost with the launch of the F-Type, the true successor to the E-Type, and the all-new XJ is one of the greatest luxury saloons money can buy. Have you ever pondered what would happen if these two bloodlines of Jaguar ever crossed? Well ponder no more! This the XFR-S…

Before you ask, yes it is indeed as bonkers as it looks. The recipe for this new car is actually relatively simple. Take the award winning Jaguar XF, load it with 550BHP, enhance the bodywork for a more aggressive appearance and voila,  you have something quite exciting. The XFR-S maintains all of its tranquility inside but that muscular body can now shift from 0-62MPH in just 4.6 seconds. Its 5.0 litre supercharged V8 delivers the car to a limited top speed of 186MPH.

Want one? Of course you do! Well, for £80,000 in May 2013 you can have one.

Jaguar Tease XFR-S

The Germans rule the performance saloon market with an iron fist. The Audi RS4 is ever popular, BMW’s M3 saloon is a near unrivaled champion and Mercedes-Benz offer an AMG flavoured C-Class that ticks pretty much every box going. Jaguar entered the market with the XFR, a valiant effort but nothing that worried the establishment all that much. Came the L.A. motor show the big cat hopes to have them quaking in their boots.

The British brand are set to announce the XFR-S, an even more performance focused variation of the award winning XF saloon. Other than this teaser image and the promise of it being “the fastest and most powerful saloon Jaguar has ever produced” no further details have been shared. It is likely that it will used a tuned 5.0 litre V8 that can already be found in the XFR.

We shall just have to wait for the cars debut next week.

McLaren To Build 12C Can-Am Edition

McLaren know a thing or two about race cars. Their Formula One program is one of the most successful in history. The legendary F1 road car won Le Mans in racing guise. 12C GT3 cars have been busy winning races all year long. That last one is very important to McLaren as they sell the 12C GT3 as a customer car and to raise its profile earlier this year they produced a concept variation. The Can-Am inspired machine took full advantage of throwing the rule book out of the window and now thanks to high levels of interest, the British team are willing to build them for the lucky few.

Limited to just 30 units, the McLaren 12C Can-Am is a no holds racer. With power restrictions being thrown out, this car now produces 630BHP from its 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8. More extreme aerodynamics don the Can-Am over the GT3 making it, as McLaren put it, “the ultimate track car.” Much like the Pagani Zonda R, the Can-Am is simply a toy to those who can afford the £375,000 price tag as it does not meet the eligibility requirements of any race series.
