Elon Musk Buys James Bond’s Lotus Espite Submarine

We have all had those daydreams where we imagine having vast quantities of money. In your fantasy what did you buy? Were to sensible and got yourself a nice house, or did you do what the rest of us dreamt and bought all of the things you though were cool when you were a kid? James Bond’s Lotus Esprite submarine has to be one of the greatest movie cars of all time and one lucky chap has just bought it at auction. That person just so happens to be Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk.

Clearly chasing childhood dreams, Musk bout the Lotus sub for $966,560. The story of how it made its way to auction is an interesting one… The Lotus is an actual working submarine that was built for the filming of Roger Moore’s Bond flick The Spy Who Loved Me. After the film was completed the car was put into storage for 10 years, all prepaid by the studio. When the contract ended and nobody claimed the car it was put up for a blind action in 1989. Since it has been on display around the world before its current sale to Musk. The electric car billionaire intends to restore the Lotus submarine back to working order.

Alfa Romeo 4C Sets Record at the Nürburgring

The “Green Hell,” as a famous Scotsman once called it, is used by just about every car manufacturer whilst designing and building a new model. Nürburgring offers a real challenge for key components of a car such as chassis and suspension. Alfa Romeo’s highly regarded 4C has just set a new record at the Nordschleife.

Records are made to be broken and the Alfa Romeo 4C has just set the fastest lap time of any road production car with under 250HP. The lap itself took just 8 minutes and 4 seconds to complete putting it in the same league as a Porsche Cayman S despite having an 84BHP disadvantage. The Turbocharged 1.7 litre engine will get the 4C to 62MPH from standing in just 4.5 seconds.

Charles Morgan on his Removal

It has been everywhere in the media that Charles Morgan has been ousted from the family company that bears his name. Details has been, some say deliberately, quiet but Charles has now released a statement on his personal blog.

“As has been widely reported, I have been asked to leave the Morgan Motor Company by the board. It is a sad decision that I am appealing; I remain a major shareholder in Morgan.

I’m proud to say I leave with the company’s annual production volumes double what they were at the start of my tenure, with new export markets such as China opened to the company. Morgan remains a small but successful family firm.

I’d like to be clear that I am not a tycoon but a family man – I inherited a company not wealth –  and unexpectedly leaving its employment will be a hardship for myself and my family. Being asked to leave the company that bears my name is also extremely personally distressing. That is made more painful as today marks 10 years since my father, Peter Morgan, died and I feel him in spirit with me in this dispute.

However my primary concern is completely for the company I have spent 30 years helping to build, and specifically for Morgan’s employees, who I hold in the highest regard. I want nothing but success for Morgan Motor Company in the future and remain committed to this goal.

I am very grateful for the expressions of support received on twitter and elsewhere, particularly from the employees of Morgan.

I will be making no further statements for the time being.”

Lamborghini Veneno Roadster is a Topless Terror

Lamborghini are currently enjoying some of their best years in terms of profitability, popularity and design. That last one is important as a Lamborghini by definition should be the most outrageous machine within 3 square miles. The one of three Lamborghini Veneno is quite possibly the most aggressive design the raging bull has produced since the Countach. Now it takes its top off.

In true red blooded Italian fashion the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster bursts into public view providing a visual assault on the eyes, and thanks to its beating V12 heart, the ears also. Just like the coupe, the Veneno Roadster is based upon the Aventador and is powered by a 6.5 litre 740BHP V12 engine. This new model is a permanent open top car as there is no canvas roof to place over the cockpit. 0-62MPH is completed in a staggering 2.9 seconds and the Roadster will keep going all the way onto its top speed of 220MPH. 9 Lamborghini Veneno Roadsters will be produced at the cost of £3.3 Million.

Honda’s New Formula One Engine Fired-Up

In a partnership that has got the entire Formula One community feeling all nostalgic, Honda and McLaren are joining forces once again for the 2015 season. The Japanese company are supplying McLaren with their engines for the new car reigniting a hugely successful force to be reckoned with. Honda have released a recording of the new engine firing-up for the first time.

New regulations, that shall be introduced at the start of the 2014 season, will see F1 cars dropping their famous V8’s for turbocharged 1.6 litre engines. The new power units will produce around the same level of power as their predecessors but will be heavily supplemented by KERS.

The Home Stretch For 2013 F1

The Formula 1 racing circuit has been utterly dominated for the last 2 months by Sebastian Vettel, with the result that the 2013 Drivers Championship is all but decided. To put things in perspective, Vettel – who drives for Red Bull Racing in partnership with Renault – is atop the standings with 297 points, with 2nd place driver Fernando Alonso following up with 207, and with only 4 races to go. A comeback for Alonso is not mathematically impossible, but it would require Vettel to drop completely out of contention in the remaining races, which given the fact that he’s won the past 5 consecutive competitions is unlikely to say the least.

However, the fact that Vettel has the Championship all but wrapped up, even in mid-October, has done nothing to affect the intrigue surrounding the rest of the competitors. Formula 1 is a sport that largely revolves around continued progress of drivers and constructors alike, as well as consistency in competitions, and for that reason fans will be intently focused on watching which drivers line up behind Vettel at the season’s close.

In looking at the rest of the contenders, we took a look at Betfair news online. This is a sports betting website complete with news and headlines in various sports, and which includes a section dedicated to Formula 1 odds, both on season finishes and individual races. Among the betting options is a particular section that offers odds for each driver to finish in the top-3 for the Drivers Championship. Based on these odds, here are the top-5 contenders (to finish top-3) behind Sebastian Vettel.

    1. Fernando Alonso(1/20) – Alonso, driving for Ferrari, is fairly solidly in 2nd place in the standings, with 207 points, and seems like a fairly sure bet to finish top-3.

    1. Kimi Raikkonen (4/5) – With 177 points, Raikkonen is alone in 3rd place, but he’s not in the clear yet, and will need to perform well in the closing races – he hasn’t won since his opening victory in Australia.

    1. Lewis Hamilton (2/1) – The Mercedes driver’s 161 points are perfectly within range of catching Raikkonen, and it’s not completely out of the question that a strong finish could challenge Alonso.

    1. Mark Webber (2/1) – Webber is beginning to become a long shot, but his 148 points are keeping him in the conversation.

    1. Jules Bianchi (7/2) – Bianchi’s odds are a mystery, given that he has accumulated 0 points, sits near the bottom of the standings, and just failed to finish at the Japanese Grand Prix. We’d count him out of contention at this point.

Again, Vettel’s success has made the conversation about the championship a dull topic. But the race for a top-3 finish is not quite over yet. Alonso and Raikkonen are clear favourites, but in the upcoming races keep an eye out for final surges from Hamilton and Webber!

Nissan ZEOD RC is Batman’s Race Car

The Le Mans 24 Hour race is one of the worlds most gruelling and dangerous motorsport events. A true test of both man and machine, pushing on through the darkness until dawn. Endurance can be seen as one of the most relevant forms of racing to the development of road car technologies. The never ending quest for reliability and fuel efficiency is what gives one car an edge over another. Looking like something Batman would bring to the track, the Nissan ZEOD RC is one of the most technologically advanced cars in the world.

ZEOD stands for Zero Emissions On Demand meaning that this spaceship is a hybrid. Powered by a 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors, the ZEOD puts out 300BHP. Over 11 laps during the race this car can collect enough energy through braking to complete a lap on electric power alone, thus spending less time in the pits refuelling overall. Nissan say that the ZEOD RC is faster over one lap than LMGTE class cars.

We look forward to seeing this racer roll out of the famous garage 56.

Volvo Reveals Future of Battery Technology, Makes Electric Cars Viable

Volvo have always been ahead of the curve when it comes to technology, particularly in terms of safety. New technologies such a pedestrian airbags and advanced crash structures are saving more lives everyday thanks to a collection of boffins who can see what the future of motoring requires. Efficiency is something that we are told on a daily basis that needs to improve in cars in order to curb our appetite for fossil fuels. Electric cars would appear to be a good solution, however, in the real world it is their heavy batteries that not only kills their handling, but also their range. Volvo is part of an EU funded project that may have found an answer.

The answer to the weight issue of electric cars (more weight = more energy required to travel X distance) that Volvo has helped develop is remarkably elegant. A composite made from nano-structured batteries and supercapacitors supported by carbonfibre allows engineers to create body panels that act as a battery. This reduces the overall weight of the car and allows for better distribution of said weight. These new batteries would also be faster to charge.

Sounds like science fiction? Guess again because Volvo have a working prototype in the form of an S80. The car weighs 15% less than the standard model and has these body panel batteries making up its roof, bonnet and doors. With the aid of regenerative braking the range for this machine is 130KM.

So, in conclusion… It looks like a normal car, it drivers like a normal car, it doesn’t have to make space for big heavy batteries and it saves the planet. Could this be the future?

Charles Morgan’s Booting from the Company is Most UnBritish

Morgan Motor Cars has been run by Charles Morgan and his family for over 100 years, quite the testament to the products that they produce. The Beautifully British character that is deeply engrained into every one of these sports cars is one of charm. Success from the new 3 Wheeler model has spurred the business on as they look to the future, however, as it stands now this future does not include Charles Morgan.

Charles Morgan is no longer a member of the management team or the board of directors at Morgan Motor Cars, yet, he does remain a shareholder. The cause of Charles’ removal is being deliberately kept quiet according to a tweet from his wife Kiera: “A little mouse tells me that the bullying that is taking place at the factory is unreal. People are being gagged & threatened not to speak.” She also said “If you all knew the truth about the unfair removal of @charlesmorganuk your blood would go cold.” Charles Morgan has said that he is going to appeal the decision but has made no further comment. His Twitter account has stayed quiet, only retweeting other users opinions on his removal.

Whatever is going on it certainly isn’t very gentlemanly, and sure as hell not very British.

Robert Kubica to Step-Up to WRC for Wales Rally GB

Robert Kubica is truly a very talented driver. His motorsport career propelled him to the very top and in Formula One this Polish star shone bright. It was said that Ferrari were on the cusp of signing him to drive for them before his terrible accident happened. Between Grand Prix Kubica enjoyed partaking in rally events and it turned out he was actually rather good! However, on one of these events he had a crash and part of a barrier pierced his car almost severing his forearm. He so far has not regained enough dexterity in his hand to drive an F1 car, but in the mean time he has been making waves in the world of rallying. Now it is his turn at the top.

Previously competing and winning in lower tiers, Rober Kubica will be armed with a top spec Citroen DS3 WRC car for Wales Rally GB. In the lesser WRC2 category he has won four rallies out of the six he has competed in and so he should feel confident in his abilities. What a remarkable man! After all he has been through his talent has prevailed and we wish Robert luck.

Wales Rally GB runs from 14th-17 November.
