Ford’s Solution to “Pinball” Parking

Sometimes there are those tasks in life which just make your day that little bit harder than necessary. Posting a letter when you have no stamps. Opening a jar when the lid just will not budge. Parking your car when the pace is only just big enough. Ford may be able to help you out with that last one thanks to their innovative Active Park Assist.

Accompanied by this rather comical advert, which if you have ever visited France you will know it to be not far from the truth, Ford’s Active Park Assist scans for a space that is large enough for your car and will then park all by itself. Magic! Well, not quite but it is very clever how the car uses its parking sensors to detect how close other vehicles are whilst it reverses into the space. All you have to do is cover the brake and let the computer do the rest. Sounds like science fiction doesn’t it? Well you don’t require the starship Enterprise for this option, simply a car with a Ford badge…

Watch the pinball video along with the blue ovals other “remarkable technologies” campaigns. Fords motto of “Go Further” is embodied in the new tech that is no longer a fantasy, but can now be found in your own car. Thought of something you want your automobile to do? Visit Ford.com and share your ideas there. You never know, the boffins at Ford might think it is a very good idea!

Lotus and Ferrari F1 Tech Banned

Formula One is an environment where gaining the smallest of advantages over a rival is the difference between starting at the front or the back of the grid. Milliseconds count and if you cant come up to scratch then loosing a race can result in not just a lack of pride but also sponsorship. Both Lotus and Ferrari have developed a piece tech that they hope to propel them to victory in 2012. That was until they were banned.

The aerodynamic profile and properties of an F1 car are crucial to how it behaves out on track. When a car is under heavy breaking the nose dips, thanks to the laws of physics, and causes the machines angle to change, thus disrupting the smooth airflow. The two teams were working on a hydraulic system that levels the car out under breaking. The FIA initially thought this was to aid the cars suspension, but now it has been seen to improve aerodynamics by such a level that it is now banned.

Back to the drawing board fellas…

New Aston Martin iPhone App Sparks Mischief

Technology, one minute it could be the bane of your life and the next an absolute necessity. Computers that crash and MP3 players that catch fire are very troublesome but when they work life gets that little bit better. Aston Martin have just released a new App for the iPhone and boy, did we have some fun taking it out of the Inside Lane office and into the big wide world.

The App itself costs a rather princely £3.49 but it does offer a multitude of features includind speedometers that use GPS for accurate measures, performance derived telemetry, a map to the worlds best roads as well as an augmented reality mode that allows for video capture overlaid with data. However we had the most fun with the accelerator mode that matches your speed to the correct note of a chosen aston martin. We quickly found that if you move your iPhone rapidly enough whilst stationary the butch tick over turns to a rampant roar of V12 meatyness. In typical Inside Lane childish “wouldn’t this be funny” fashion we piled into Dan’s little Vauxhall Corsa and headed to a petrol station. Hook the iPhone up to the sound system and crank the volume up just as you start the engine. Not only does this instantly grab the attention of anyone with ears but leaves people bemused as to how such a little car has such a big voice.

Well worth the money…

Audi Magazine On iPad

The iPad has taken the world by storm with one being sold every 35 seconds and making its critics look a tad stupid in the process. The device has many purposes  but a key function is its interactive applications, such an application that Audi has just made specifically for Apple’s new baby.

Audi’s prestigious driver’s magazine is now available as an app for the iPad. It’s not only pioneering the new virtual media movement but also getting the already successful magazine to a wider audience. In the app’s first two weeks it has already broken the top 50 list with over 15,000 downloads. Audi hope this will further the magazines readership of over 350,000 per issue. Download yours now for free from the Apple store.
