Ford’s Solution to “Pinball” Parking

Sometimes there are those tasks in life which just make your day that little bit harder than necessary. Posting a letter when you have no stamps. Opening a jar when the lid just will not budge. Parking your car when the pace is only just big enough. Ford may be able to help you out with that last one thanks to their innovative Active Park Assist.

Accompanied by this rather comical advert, which if you have ever visited France you will know it to be not far from the truth, Ford’s Active Park Assist scans for a space that is large enough for your car and will then park all by itself. Magic! Well, not quite but it is very clever how the car uses its parking sensors to detect how close other vehicles are whilst it reverses into the space. All you have to do is cover the brake and let the computer do the rest. Sounds like science fiction doesn’t it? Well you don’t require the starship Enterprise for this option, simply a car with a Ford badge…

Watch the pinball video along with the blue ovals other “remarkable technologies” campaigns. Fords motto of “Go Further” is embodied in the new tech that is no longer a fantasy, but can now be found in your own car. Thought of something you want your automobile to do? Visit Ford.com and share your ideas there. You never know, the boffins at Ford might think it is a very good idea!

Review: Ford Focus 1.0 litre EcoBoost Estate Zetec

Are petrol cars fated to become just a chapter in the complete history of the motor car? With diesel engined cars producing astonishing MPG figures, the growing uptake in hybrid cars and the cost of fuel the answer to that would appear apparent. Audi are even looking into the validity of a high performance diesel supercar, a sector that is currently exclusive to petrol power. However, petrol cars still have a very strong following from those who enjoy the benefits of a high revving engine and a generally more engaging drive. The current trend for petrol cars is a one of downsizing and turbo charging. For example, Mercedes-Benz have replaced their 6.2 litre motor with a 5.5 litre turbocharged one. It enables manufacturers to meet emissions standards, increase fuel economy and meet the performance demands of the customer. Ford have taken this to the extreme with their new 1.0 litre Focus.

A 1.0 litre engine in a car as big as a Ford Focus I hear you cry? Factor into the equation that our test car was the even larger estate variant and the tiny little engine seems even more out of place. Yet, it isn’t… This engine that is literally the size of an A4 sheet of paper is nothing short of a technological masterpiece. Despite its low displacement, this three cylinder with the aid of a turbo produces 94BHP, a figure the trumps the least powerful 1.6 litre in the range. Surly a 1.0 litre car could never be a viable alternative to a 1600cc engine, could it?

First let us view the car as a whole. The Ford Focus is one of the UK’s biggest selling hatchbacks and offers practicality and an involving drive to the masses. Inside the cabin is well sculpted with a very modern console and curved dashboard. The new Focus, regardless of what engine you chose, is an ergonomic triumph with seating being perfectly adjustable, driver controls are all within arms reach and everything having a logical positioning. Visibility is most commendable all around and its 5 star Euro NCAP rating provides reassurance to families looking for high safety ratings. Something else that will appeal to Mums and Dads is the vast amount of space on offer in the boot. Huge shopping trips, lawnmowers, dogs and maybe even a small cow will fit into the back of this estate with ease. Our Zetec test car even came with a DAB radio which makes for crystal clear listening.

This car has to be driven to be believed! The first thing that hits you when you start it up just how quite it is. It is near silent and often led many of my passengers to believe the engine wasn’t running at all. This lack of noise also makes for a seamless start/stop system that often goes unnoticed when in operation. Considering its odd number of cylinders you would expect some sort of vibration from the engine, but that is as absent as its noise. Driving around town the steering is well weighted and the ride is more than capable of dealing with the rough and tumble that British roads provide. Not once did I complain that it was sluggish out of junctions and in truth had you told me that this was the 1.6 litre car I would have believed you. On motorways it can hold its own too as the Focus surged past slower traffic with ease. At these higher speeds, even with a 5 speed gearbox, the engine is only doing around 3,000RPM. There is a 6 speed option if you really want it but from my experience the 5 is more than capable. Fuel economy on our tests in multiple environments produced an average of 47MPG. The smaller engine also makes this Focus even more agile through the corners thanks to the lack of weight. It has always been an involving car to drive, but this engine really does give it a new lease of life.

Honestly, these words do not do the engine justice and the only real way you are going to understand just how good this car can be is if you drive one yourself. I had read good things about the 1.0 litre Focus before this road test, but seeing is believing and you had better believe that Ford have hit the nail directly on its head with this car.

Ford Focus Cosworth Boasts 330BHP

Salt and pepper, bread and butter, jelly and ice cream. All of these things just belong together. Cosworth and Ford are another pair that when combined produce some of the greatest machines on earth. The Sierra and Escort Cosworths were living legends and showed the world what a well sorted chassis and heaps of power could do on tarmac. It has been far too long since the blue oval has consorted with this powerhouse. At the SEMA show a concept car gives us new hope.

This is the Ford Focus Cosworth CS 330. Based upon the brilliant new Focus ST, this hot hatch produces 330BHP. That’s more than the outgoing Focus RS! Still powered by a 2.0 litre four cylinder motor, the extra power is thanks to a new exhaust and induction system. The suspension has also been heavily upgraded along with the brakes, both being provided by Ford Racing.

Though just a concept car for now, the current lack of an RS model could potentially see something like this make production.

Why The Hot Hatchback Is A Hero

You see them milling about almost everyday doing general everyday things. The hatchback is the staple of the British motoring diet as they are well priced and practical for a whole manner of applications. You see them with a fridge-freezer poking out their boot, or packed full of children and dogs. So why am I am I hailing the workhorse of the road as the best thing on wheels?

You see I also love performance cars, as does every other red blooded male. The attention to detail ascertained through a never ending search for speed is amazing to see forged in metal. Their sculpted shapes are icons that are pinned to children’s walls, stared at through showroom windows, and snapped up by our camera phones. Behind the wheel of these machines you feel such a sense of occasion as you burble off onto the open road. They provoke emotion as they howl and twist the very fabric of physics. But in all honesty, though these times are fantastic, they are few and far between. Most of the time you are treating the car as if it is made of glass, just pottering in fear of speed bumps or a gap that isn’t quite big enough to fit a Ferrari 458. This is where the hot-hatch comes into play…

You see being based on a hatchback these machines are just as usable as the standard model. You can see out of the windows, you get more than 11MPG and better still your woman can still fit all of her clutter in the boot. A hot hatchback provides all the supercar thrills of being thrown back into your seat with the tyres screeching but in a much more accessible way. To get the most from a Lamborghini you really have to push it and 97% of the time you just cant do that on the road. Getting that tingling sensation from a Focus ST, however, simply requires you to work the gearbox a bit harder and flex your right foot. I guarantee that after a month the novelty of a supercar will have worn off and you will see a man in his bright yellow Megane RS, having just dropped the kids off at school, enjoying a blast down that narrow country lane you are terrified of.

With this wave of next-gen ASBO endusers well underway, the future is bright for the hot-hatch, and that isn’t just because you can buy one in orange.

Ford Focus Zetec S Means You Can Have Your Cake and Eat It

So it’s time to buy a new family car. It has to be practical, economical, reliable and presentable. Ford’s new Focus tends to come top of the pile when you mix in value for money and so choosing one is very wise. But what if you want a subtle bit of spice in your family motor? The new Zetec S answers the call.

Here to to stave your hunger for the Focus ST until next year, this is the Zetec S. It is all of the above with just a pinch of chili powder. Stiffer springs and new dampers make the handling a little sharper whilst new bumpers and 17 inch rims give the school runner a bit more character. Four engines are on offer including the top of the range 1.6 litre with 177BHP. Don’t mistake this for a car as potent as the ST, but if you like your curries mild yet not too mild, this car is your perfect companion.

Ford Focus ST To Star In “The Sweeney” Movie

It’s the 1970’s and the family have gathered around the T.V. to watch The Sweeney. The action packed cop show with gun battles and fantastic car chases captivated millions. Next years sees a rejuvenated plot hit the big screen. But what will the Flying Squad detectives be using as their wheels? The Ford Granada has had its day…

Detectives Jack Regan and George Carter will saddle up with the new Ford Focus ST, a choice we very much approve of. The car will be seen in hot pursuit of “baddies” through the streets of London. The 2.0 litre 247BHP ASBO inducer will be a little more subtle in black as opposed to goldfish yellow as shown in Frankfurt. We look forward to the cars big screen debut.

Ford’s New Focus ST-R Swaps The Traffic For The Track

Sometimes you just get the feeling that manufacturers are adding on extra letters to the end of their models simply to demonstrate their level of alphabetical competence or as an excuse to use up the surplus pieces of wood effect panelling on the dashboard of an end-of-production car. Well you can take this idea and toss it out of the new Focus ST-R’s electric window as its 2.0  litre EcoBoost engine catapults you down the home straight on a track day!

With the ST road version also debuting today, professionals, amateurs and track-day enthusiasts alike will no doubt relish the news of its racing alter ego’s unveiling at Frankfurt. As well as the standard 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder, 247 BHP engine available in the ST, the race tweaked production based ST-R is a fully-prepared competition car featuring FIA regulation roll cage, uprated brakes and track-tuned suspension.

It will be available to teams soon, starting in North America, to race in a variety of series but will of course be released on general sale to petrol heads world wide in a ready-to-race off the peg format. Proof then, if required, that in this case, that “R” is more than just a letter.

It’s HERE! The New Ford Focus ST

As far as hot-hatchbacks are concerned Ford produce some of the best in the business. Good value, great thrills and the wife can fit all her shopping in the boot. With the new Focus becoming adopted by families all over the world its time for the blue oval to reveal the production variant of the all-new Focus ST. Hold tight, things are about to get spicy!

Amidst the new bumpers, spoilers and general ASBO inspired clad sits a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder, 247BHP engine. “Can you smell burning rubber yet?” The pumped up Focus also gains in the torque department, producing a fantastic 265lb-ft. Better yet, if owning a dog was the only thing stopping you from buying the last ST, fear not as this 2012 model will be sold with the option of being an estate. Spot on Ford! Thus far you have done no wrong.

Prices have yet to be announced but one thing is for sure, we can’t wait to take our turn behind the wheel.

New Eco Focus Does 83MPG

Whats that? Petrol is now worth more than a living dinosaur? Today the cost of fuel is ludicrous and getting to the point where peoples decision on what new car to buy is guided by MPG. Fords fantastic new Focus is a great family package and now the blue oval are offering it in its most environmentally friendly flavor.

The car is powered by a 1.6 litre TDCi diesel Econetic engine that will achieve 83.1MPG. That makes it the most economic family car that isn’t a hybrid. Churning out 106BHP this unit reduces fuel consumption through the addition of new fuel injectors. Also cooling systems have been revised along with engine management.

Ford Confirms New Focus RS

Rally Sport. Two words that belong on legendary Fast Fords. Arguably one of the best combinations were the Focus and this RS badge producing two fantastically insane hot hatchbacks that took the 5 year old that lives in all of us, and handed him a can of sugary drink! The last Focus RS, in our opinion, is still one of the best hatchbacks to ever go on sale. Exhaust pipes like artillery peaces, turbo power and handling to match all this excitement made for quite the recipe. Now with the third generation Focus, IT SHALL RISE AGAIN…

Numerable sources have confirmed that the new RS is well on its way and is ready to take the next-generation car down ASBO lane. Using a pumped up version of the 2.0 litre Eco-Boost four cylinder, the new car is expected to have between 340-370BHP. There is still no word on when the new Focus RS will surface but we are already anticipating our turn behind the wheel.
