Maserati aren’t exactly what they used to be in their youth. The former Grand Prix champions and a prestigious sports car manufacturer are today owned by Ferrari and as a result do not produce such machines. The result is Maserati building luxury cars as opposed to machines that compete with the top flight Ferrari’s. However, ever now and then the prancing horse gives the famed trident an opportunity to relive their heritage. The Maserati MC12 was one such time.

Based upon the Ferrari Enzo, Maserati produced just 50 road legal MC12’s allowing a racing variation to enter the FIA GT Championship. The racing inspired machine was powered by a 6 litre V12 heart direct from Ferrari. But that was back in 2004 and it will soon be time to replace the aging MC12. A new racer means a new limited series road car and it is this machine that shall be built on top of LaFerrari’s carbon fibre monocoque chassis. It won’t use the Ferrari HYKERS but will likely borrow the F12’s naturally aspirated 6.3 litre V12 engine.

For obvious reasons the new MC12 will not be faster than Ferrari’s new flagship.
