The 2016 Honda Civic Type R is a furiously fast hot hatchback that is arguably the most exciting car to drive in its class. It’s ability to put 306 BHP down to the ground via its front wheels without killing anyone was mighty impressive, not to mention a once record breaking Nurburgring lap time. However, the new Civic is on the horizon and with that comes the an all-new Type R. This is the 2017 Honda Civic Type R
So here it is presented as a close to production concept car. What a menacing machine clearly showing that Honda has no intention of listing to those who thought the previous car was too bold. In this dark shade it looks like something Batman might take to the supermarket. This new 2017 Honda Civic Type R is based upon the hatchback model. An aggressive front splitter and gaping bonnet intake give the car real attitude. Blistered wheel arches help widen the track by 30mm. A vast rear wing will no doubt play a role in high speed stability, whilst a rear diffuser and triple exhaust pipe finish off the rear.
Under the bonnet will likely be the same 2.0 litre four cylinder turbocharged VTEC engine producing a yet to be disclosed amount of horsepower. Clearly it will be more than the 306 BHP of the current car and will likely be up there with competitors. A 6 speed manual transmission will handle the swapping of cogs. As for the drivetrain, speculation starts here as Honda haven’t revealed anything on how that power will get to the ground. Popular thinking is that it will remain front wheel drive in order to get this car to market quickly.
Honda fully intend to reclaim the Nurburgring lap record with this car.
Good news for our American viewers who have been longing for the Type R to go stateside… This car will be sold in the USA. As for the rest of Europe, it will replace the current model of which has had a relatively short life. The finished production car will be shown at next years Geneva motor show with the new 2017 Honda Civic Type R going on sale late next year.
