35 years ago you either had money, or you didn’t. You owned an enjoyable car, or you didn’t. The rich perused in their Ferrari’s whilst the rest of us were herded along in faceless white goods that’s only purpose was to ferry you to and from work. But then came three little letters that changed the motor industry forever. GTI. VW’s Golf GTI was a cheap affordable way to get your genuine thrills behind the wheel without owning a castle. Over the years almost every manufacturer has mimicked the Germans move with their own performance brands for hatchbacks. Today GTI turns 35.

As a gift to all VW has launched a special Golf named, predictably, GTI Edition 35. This hatch has some unique styling and a brand new interior. The changes are not just aesthetic as the turbo-charged four cylinder 2.0 litre engine now produces 232BHP. 0-62MPH is completed in just 6.9 seconds. Deliveries start later this year as the cost of £27,815.
