2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra Is A Fitting Tribute

The motor industry fell silent this May at the news that legendary founder of the Shelby marque, Carroll Shelby, had passed away aged 89. Even in his twilight years the inspirational motoring icon remained committed to developing the best high performance cars. Only last year, he spent more than five hours putting the most powerful production Mustang ever through its paces during testing sessions at Ford’s Arizona Proving Grounds. Not one for a quiet retirement then.

Being instrumental in the creation of Ford’s greatest performance cars such as the Cobra, the GT40 and the Mustang since the 1960s, it seemed fitting that Ford, Shelby American and Ford Racing should come together to produce a one-of-a-kind tribute in his honour. The result has finally been unveiled as the 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra wide-body Mustang which draws on the already considerable power of the 662BHP 2013 Shelby GT500 and turns it up a notch. The special edition gets a suitably colossal Ford Racing 4.0-litre supercharger that now generates more than 850BHP and enormous 13-inch wide rear wheels with high performance tyres to put down the increased power. The specially designed bonnet and new rear wide-body kit are finished in the distinctive blue with white stripes made famous by the original Cobras of the 1960’s, celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.

It seems apt that the new Cobra will be a never to be repeated one-off, mirroring the image of Carroll Shelby himself, who changed the performance world forever.

2013 Shelby GT500 Convertible Officially Drops Its Top

These days you can buy an open-top variation of almost any car. From Aston Martin’s Virage to Renaults baby Wind, there are many options to choose from if you fancy a slice of alfresco motoring. But what if your are a muscle car manic wanting all the BHP of the drag strip, whilst having the blue sky overhead? Shelby may just have something for you.

Welcome to the most powerful Mustang ever produced. Just like its coupe counterpart, the GT500 Convertible churns out a biblical 650BHP from a glorious 5.8 litre V8. That isn’t where these big numbers end, oh no… 600lb-ft of torque rips up the tarmac and Shelby have had to limit the top speed to 155MPH in a bid to save the roof from blowing away.

It is the worlds most powerful production V8 in the world and someone took a tin-opener to it!

Going… Going… GONE in 60 Seconds

The hero car of any film is something to admire. Be it the Duke boys Dodge Charger or one of the cheeky Minis from the original Italian Job, each machine has become immortalized on the big screen and produced a cult following. The Mustang has done this more than any other with its character that often outshone its co-stars. The film Gone in 60 Seconds cast a 1967 GT500 Mustang as the lead car and its inspirational chase scene cemented its place in the hall of fame. Now “Eleanor” could be all yours…

For filming 12 of these sleek beasts were produced but unfortunately due to the nature of the stunt scenes many were destroyed in action sequences. One of the few remaining examples is going under the hammer and is expected to fetch just over £100,000. Imagine you being in the same seat that Nicholas Cage once occupied blasting down the road just listening to that bellowing V8. It could all be yours, but at a cost.

2013 Shelby Mustang GT500 To Do 200MPH

Mustang. A name synonymous with legendary stories, heroics and determination. Used to talk about specific horses and fighter planes, it was when Ford put the nameplate on its car that the public could have their very own stallion. Mr Shelby made his name preparing special Mustangs and today he is still doing the very same. Shelby’s snake has slithered its way onto the 2013 model.

Now you might be thinking that the 2013 car will be just a series of minor updates that results in some extra power and a new grill… Well, you are half right. The new ‘stang doesn’t look much different to the previous model with the only real changes coming to the grill. However, lifting the bonnet reveals a 5.8 litre aluminium supercharged block that produces 650BHP as standard. Its torque figures are just as impressive sitting at 600lb-ft! Yet there is one more figure that casts a shadow upon the ones that have gone before it. From the showroom the new 2013 GT500 will do over 200MPH.

2011 Shelby Mustang GT in Motion

The 2011 Shelby Mustang GT is a huge step forwards in the evolution of the Mustang. Unlike previous model refreshes this one has an upgrade that is beneficial beyond measure, an aluminium block. This significantly reduces weight and as a result increased the cars overall responsiveness. The Mustang has always been a car we admired for its noise, design and heritage, but never for its handling.

Hopefully this new 2011 model, that has taken a trip to weight watchers, can change our opinion.  The Video certainly makes this pony car look more refined than its predecessor.
