The Chinese Motor Show in Beijing has begun and as a result so has the flurry of concept cars. The trouble is that 90% of concept cars, thought amazing in their own way, will never make it into production. However there is the 10% that look so production ready that it could go on sale tomorrow. This snazzy new BMW Gran Coupe is a clear case and example.
The Gran Coupe is part of what BMW are calling its design night where they will preview some upcoming models. This four-door concept is very striking to look at, not over stated but it does have a real presence about it. This is what BMW had to say about it: “In the BMW Concept Gran Coupé, BMW presents the vision of a 4-door vehicle which combines the exclusivity of a Gran Turismo with the fascination of a high-performance sports car. The design of the concept study underscores the expertise of the brand BMW in the development of vehicles with a distinctive sporty character which offer space for more than two occupants.”
For many years now the industry has been speculating about an 8 Series in BMW’s line-up. The Gran Sport appears to tick all of theboxes that we would expect this rumoured car to and with this concept looking so close to production, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we saw an 8 Series by nextyear. The increasing amount of test cars spied on German roads would further suggest this.
The Gran Coupe is on display now at the Beijing Motor Show.
