Stage one of Rallye Monte Carlo, the opening round of the 2017 World Rally Championship, has been cancelled following the death of a spectator. The tragic incident occurred when Hyundai driver Hayden Paddon crashed and rolled his i20 WRC off the road near the end of the 21.25km test. Emergency services were dispatched to assist the spectator who was taken by helicopter to hospital in Nice. Doctors were unable to save the victim.

Paddon and co-driver John Kennard escaped the crash uninjured. Meanwhile, event organisers have launched a full investigation into the incident.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim.
